Start of bike to work 2022: over 80,000 cyclists expected!

1 May 2022. Today marks the start of bike to work, Switzerland’s largest biking and health promotion campaign. Pro Velo Switzerland is expecting over 80,000 cyclists to bike to work in May and June.

Adrian Freiburghaus, Project Manager at bike to work: ‘‘After two challenging years an absolutely record year seems to be in sight: today the number of participating companies exceeds last year by over 30%. More than 2’513 companies have registered so far for the Bike Challenge (as against 1932 last year). According to our projections, a further 300 companies will register by the end of May‘‘.

Today Sunday, 1 May 2022 the streets are still quiet, but tomorrow, when the commuter traffic returns on a daily basis, ten thousand workers will be biking to their work
After two years full of uncertainties for companies, many of their staff are returning to the office. A variety of studies show that the home office obligation led to a lack of mobility and often to a few extra kilos of weight. bike to work is an ideal campaign for companies to promote more mobility and strengthen team spirit among their staff.

Laetitia Anglade of the company Insolight AG in Renens (VD): ‘‘We have been participating since 2019. Acting in a sound ecological manner is one of our core values. That’s why the bike to work Challenge is a good opportunity for us to have a positive impact on the climate and our own wellbeing. We help each other to repair our bikes and there’s a great team spirit. It’s always fun to compare the number of kilometres covered. At the end we award an internal prize to the person who has pedalled the most kilometres!‘‘

Clash of the Swiss university hospitals in the ‘Battle Royale‘

The Swiss university hospitals of Basel, Bern, Geneva and Zurich are going a step further with bike to work. They are competing against each other in launching the ‘Battle Royale‘. A specially created landing page on biketowork.ch shows the current results of this hospitals challenge at a glance.

Nina Tammler, Head of the Sustainability Unit of the Insel Gruppe: ‘‘bike to work has been a firm fixture in the Insel Gruppe calendar for many years, as health promotion and environmental protection are key concerns for us. Playful trials of strength with the other university hospitals is an additional incentive for our staff to get on their bikes and pedal away!‘‘

Registration possible until the end of May

Interested companies and participants can register for the Challenge 2022 online until 31 May 2022.
